The popularity of SUVs has steadily risen since their debut over 30 years ago; they are now ranked as the best-selling automobile class in the United States. As the styles of SUVs have grown and evolved in response to the changing needs and demands of drivers, a segment of smaller crossover SUV style has emerged with appealing functionality.

Crossover SUVs retain the versatility of full-size SUVs but are delivered in slightly more compact, value-priced packages. The product is a wide range of spacious, sporty cars that are equally at home navigating busy city streets or unpaved country roads.

Luxury brands like Land Rover and BMW are making their mark in this arena, translating their expertise in designing sleek sports cars and sedans to the SUV market. Their luxury crossover entries include the 2018 Land Rover Evoque and the 2018 BMW X3.

The Land Rover Evoque is powered by 2.0-liter turbo four engine rated at 237 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged option that bumps up to 286 horsepower and 295 pound-feet is available on the HSE Dynamic and Autobiography trims. Either engine coupled with the standard nine-speed automatic transmission gets up to 29 miles per gallon on the highway.

The BMW X3 provides a comparable 248 horsepower with its standard 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder TwinPower turbo engine. The performance-oriented 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine produces 355 horsepower. The standard engine gets up to 29 mpg on the highway, with the 3.0-liter engine maxing at 27 mpg.

Luxury and Convenience

Land Rover and BMW are known the world over for crafting autos that marry precision mechanicals with superlative luxury features for truly unforgettable driving experiences. These automaker's entries into the crossover SUV market offer such deluxe amenities as power front seats with memory, ambient lighting, and keyless start.

In addition, the Evoque offers optional envy-inducing features such as standard leather seating, front and rear parking sensors, and optional ventilated front seats with massage function that are not included in BMW's offerings.

The Land Rover's 18.2-gallon fuel tank is larger than the BMW's 17.2-gallon capacity, saving you time at the pump.

The BMW, measuring 186 inches long, is about 14 inches longer than the Evoque. Their widths and heights are nearly identical.

The Land Rover can easily transport 5 adults plus 20.3 cubic feet of rear storage space, increasing to 51 cubic feet with the back seat down. The BMW X3 has slightly more interior space, with 28.7 cubic feet of trunk space, rising to 62.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Both Land Rover and BMW's warranties cover new vehicles with a 4-year/50,000-mile plan. BMW offers three years of scheduled maintenance, while Land Rover offers 24-hour roadside assistance for the duration of the warranty and a complimentary off-road driving lesson.

Land Rover and BMW are known the world over for the unique and thoughtful European design and performance. Both the Evoque and the X3 offer solid crossover options, but the Evoque offers more innovative and comfortable interior features in addition to its practical and comprehensive roadside assistance program.
