If you're shopping for a luxury compact or midsize SUV, two exceptional candidates are the 2018 Range Rover Velar and the 2018 Audi Q5. Both are well-rounded vehicles that excel in almost every department, from performance to ride comfort. While it's difficult to choose between the two, you'll be able to make a better-informed decision after learning how the Velar differs from the Q5.

The Range Rover Velar offers three engine options; the Audi Q5 gives only two. The Velar's base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 247 horsepower, five less than the Q5's standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, the diesel version of its four-cylinder makes 45 pound-feet more torque than does the Q5's base engine. The Velar also has a more powerful 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine that puts out 380 horsepower, which is 26 more than the Q5's 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6. In addition, the Velar is fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the Q5 uses a seven-speed automatic transmission.

When it comes to handling, the Velar has several advantages over the Q5. First, the Velar has a 2-inch longer wheelbase than the Q5, resulting in a smoother and more stable ride. Its advantage in handling is further enhanced with a 1.5-inch wider average track. Additionally, the Velar features a standard automatic load-leveling suspension for better off-road clearance. This feature is unavailable in the Q5.

Fuel Economy

If you're concerned about fuel costs, the Velar may be a better option. It delivers an EPA-rated 26/30 mpg (city/highway), which is significantly higher than the Q5's 23/27 mpg rating. The Velar also has two fuel-saving features that are absent in the Q5: a regenerative braking system and an automatic engine start/stop system.

Safety & Security

Both the Velar and the Q5 have earned high safety ratings with their tough bodies and extensive safety features. Yet the Velar has several well-thought-out safety features that you won't find in the Q5. It comes with an available driver alert monitor that detects and alerts you to driver inattentiveness and drowsiness. It also has optional headlight washers to maximize headlight output and improve visibility in adverse weather conditions.

Luxury & Convenience

Driver-only memory seats and mirrors are advanced features that automatically adjust the driver's seat, steering wheel, and outside mirrors to suit the preferences of different drivers. This feature is standard in the Velar but costs extra with the Q5. To facilitate easy parking, the Velar comes with an optional parking assistance system that lets it back into a parking spot or parallel park by itself. The Q5 doesn't have this feature.

While the 2018 Range Rover Velar is more expensive than the 2018 Audi Q5, you may save money in the long run with the Velar because of its excellent fuel economy. If you want to find out if the Velar is the right SUV for you, contact Hennessy Land Rover Gwinnett to schedule a test drive.
